I am one of many people to have paid rent to the Lands deptment for a strip of virgin land of no value whatsoever. The charge was $50 per year. I paid it grudgingly. Now they want $350. In may case for a strip of land 20m wide and 250m long.
I have done some math here 250m x 20m = 5000m^2 which is 0.5 ha. My property is 40ha. At the rate the department charges this would entitle me to charge $30000 per year for agistment of my 40ha.
Is this the Mafia or what?
I have prepared a petition to the Minister as shown below. If you are willing to sign it let me know so I can collect your signature. Also, it would be nice to spread this NSW wide for more effect can anyone suggest the best way to do this.
I don't mind doing the running around. Here is the proposed petition please feel free to suggest additions or changes.

Petition to the Minister of Lands Regarding Road enclosures.
The undersigned and many others we could not reach have for many years paid a rental to the Department of Lands for road enclosures on our property.
The rental being in the vicinity of $50, or an amount close to this. This charge was an unfair imposition on the landholder, but most paid up, as the amount was not too excessive. New policy now demands $350 for the next 3 year leading up to $350 per year.
This amount for a strip of land 20 metres wide, unfenced, unmaintained, is preposterously high. The Lands Department also offered to consider selling these blocks and the prospective buyer is required to submit $475 for the privilege to find out if the land is indeed capable of being sold/bought.
If the road enclosure can be closed and the sales were to go through, the sale is further burdened with several high charges. In effect the land in question is worth much less than these charge, not to mention the added land value.
- We the undersigned request to be granted the basic right to refuse to rent or buy property which we don’t want.
- We also strongly object to be forced to fence government property under the threat of incurring these rental charges.
- We petition you to waive all charges rentals or requirements to fence road enclosures on the grounds that such charges, rentals and requirements are grossly unfair and as a government revenue raiser target only a minority group.
