Brogo Wilderness Fire, January 2007
In January 2007, a Fire started by Lightning in the Brogo Wilderness threatened to break out into settled areas and engulf country that was devastated in the major 1952 Fires.
A major Operations Centre was established adjacent to the Brogo Wilderness where some 10-12 Helicopters and support crews battled the fire for some weeks, finally bringing it under control with the assistance of rain and very hard work.
The RAFT Crews were daily initially winched into the fireground, and after Helipads were cleared by hand they controlled the spread of the fire by hard manual labour in very steep terrain.
With careful planning at the Bega Fire Control Office involving all emergency Agencies, a major disaster was avoided, with many millions of dollars spent in this major operation.
The Brogo Community and other Communities were kept advised of the situation at all times, and they are all most grateful to all concerned for helping to protect these communities.
