Veterinary Homoeopathy
Homoeopathy is both a science and an art of medicine. It is based on the law of similars, first recorded by Hippocrates and developed into a system of medicine by Dr Samuel Hahnemann, which states that ‘like cures like’.
The medicines have been thoroughly tested to determine the full extent of the symptoms they cause. A patient’s disease is assessed individually to determine its full extent of mental, emotional, and physical symptoms. Then the medicine which causes the most similar disease pattern is used to re-order the dis-eased patient - or stimulate the body’s own healing processes.
Conditions that can be treated homoeopathically
In acute diseases homoeopathy can provide rapid relief of symptoms and assist the body to achieve speedier recovery.
In advanced terminal conditions Homoeopathy can used to provide palliative care.
Homoeopathy is particularly useful in chronic diseases where the body is not able to recover unaided.
The dis-ease may be behavioral such as aggression, fear, or anxiety; or physical such as allergies, chronic infection, organ dysfunction, or chronic pain.
It is important to remember that in homoeopathy, it is not the condition that is treated, but the patient as a whole.
Any condition where the body has the capacity to heal if properly stimulated may be aided by homoeopathy.
The Consultation
The initial consultation takes one to two hours during which I conduct a physical examination and investigate your pet’s behaviour and history, observing his or her demeanour and reactions. After a thorough study, I select the appropriate medicine and prescribe a single dose.
We observe the effects of the remedy for up to a month, and then review the case to determine whether subsequent treatment is required.
How are the medicines given to animals?
The medicines are usually given as a single oral dose, either as a drop or a crushed tablet. They dissolve easily in the mouth.
Often patients show a marked improvement after a single dose.
Homoeopathy and Conventional Medicine
Conventional medicine has advanced dramatically since the birth of homoeopathy 200 years ago and now these two originally antagonistic disciplines may be used in a complimentary manner.
For instance, a severe overwhelming acute infection may require prompt antibiotic treatment to save a patient’s life, but a grumbling chronic infection, which is only partially controlled by antibiotics, requires stimulation of the body to heal itself.
Although conventional diagnosis may not be required to determine the correct homoeopathic medicine for the patient, diagnostic tests often help with prognosis and may reveal an underlying physical problem requiring surgery.
